What to do if your pet has a wound
- Contact the clinic and seek advice from a veterinary nurse or vet.
- Is the wound bleeding? If so apply firm pressure until the animal is brought to see the vet. Try to use a clean towel to do this. Do not tie anything around the limb as circulation can be damaged.
- Is the wound dirty? Do not attempt to clean the wound as this can introduce more bacteria and cause more damage. The vet will do this at the clinic.
- Is the animal having difficulty breathing? If so this is an emergency and needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Try to keep the pet calm in the meantime.
- Is the pet bearing weight on all four limbs? If unable to stand, the pet will need to be carried gently wrapped in a blanket.
- Bite wounds become infected very easily so its important to bring your pet in for treatment sooner rather than later (particularly in cats).
- Again, contact the surgery for advice if there are is any concern regarding a wound. In an emergency situation ALWAYS ring us first so we can be ready to receive you when you arrive.
