Lily Thompson, a four year old Weimaraner has been awarded
the Fromus Vet Group’s...

OCTOBER PET OF THE MONTH AWARD

A heavily pregnant Lily came to see us as her owner was worried that she was several days overdue. The normal length of pregnancy in the dog is 63 days.

Lily was examined by one of the vets and it was decided to give her a special injection to try induce labour. As this injection was not taking effect, the only option left was CAESARIAN SECTION.

CAESARIAN SECTION means removing the puppies from the womb through a surgical wound under general anaesthetic.

Following the initial incision it was obvious that Lily’s womb was very large and that she was carrying a large number of puppies.

All of the nurses were summoned to help as when the puppies are lifted out of the womb, each one needs individual resuscitation and special attention. The first, second, third, fourth, fifth puppy was removed and the puppies just kept coming…

Eventually, when the last puppy was removed, they were all counted and in total there were ELEVEN PUPPIES!!! The operating theatre was filled with the sounds of puppies as four nurses worked on the puppies and one nurse monitored Lily’s anaesthetic. Without this level of care, some of the puppies would not have survived.

Lily is coping very well and has been in to see us since her surgery.
