Susie came to see us in July as her owner was worried that she had been losing weight and had not been eating normally. It also emerged that Susie had also been drinking and urinating more than normal.
The vet tested Susie’s urine and the results were suspicious of DIABETES MELLITUS. Susie had some blood tests done to confirm the diagnosis which revealed a very high blood sugar level. It was clear that Susie would need daily insulin injections to control her blood sugar. Susie’s owner came in for a lesson to learn how to inject insulin. Mr and Mrs Hamilton were very brave and learned to inject very quickly.
Every morning, Mr Hamilton feeds Susie, then injects her with insulin. She is fed a special diet which helps to control her blood sugar levels.
Shortly after Susie was diagnosed with diabetes, she came to see us as Mrs Hamilton thought her vision was poor. This was in fact directly linked to her diabetes, as dogs can form cataracts due to the effect of high blood sugars and fats. Unfortunately, Susie was blind, but there was an option of surgically removing the cataracts. Mrs Hamilton decided to opt for surgery to give Susie a chance to see again. Susie went to see a specialist for cataract surgery and has now had cataract surgery.
Susie and Mrs Hamilton come to visit us regularly and everyone at Fromus has grown fond of both of them.
