Facts about cats and kittens
Maggie’s owners were responsible owners who had planned her pregnancy and found good homes for the kittens. But not all owners are so responsible:
- A female cat can become pregnant from 5 months old.
- She can have up to three litters a year, of around 1 – 8 kittens per litter.
- Cats are reflex ovulators, which means that female cats will ovulate (produce eggs) in response to mating
– almost all matings will result in a pregnancy!
- Within her lifetime, an unneutered female cat can be responsible for up to 20,000 descendants.
- Unplanned matings can result in a female cat catching diseases such as Feline Leukaemia virus, FIV (feline AIDS), and Chlamydia.
- Every year, Cats Protection rehome around 75,000 unwanted or abandoned cats & kittens.
The RSPCA and other animal charities rehome thousands more.
The only way to prevent unplanned pregnancy is to have your cat spayed. If you would like further information, please make an appointment to speak to your vet today.
